Weighed against Scripture
“Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.”
The image of deep calling to deep, of waves crashing over the psalmist while he clings to God's steadfast love, is exactly the emotional and spiritual territory Lecrae occupies here.
“And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.”
Lecrae's line about walking with a limp from wrestling with the Holy Ghost directly invokes Jacob at Peniel. Struggle with God that leaves a mark is not a failure of faith; it is faith.
“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
The bridge names Jesus as 'high priest' who is 'low enough to bring them.' This passage grounds that image: a high priest who sympathizes with weakness and meets us in it.
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
God's promise to hold and uphold directly answers the song's fear of losing grip. The chorus resolves precisely here: 'God reminded me He's holding on.'
This is a lament song in the tradition of the Psalms. Lecrae is processing racial grief (running for Ahmaud Arbery), personal loneliness, fatherlessness, and spiritual exhaustion with raw honesty. The tension is real and the rage is real, but the song's anchor is the repeated confession that God is the one holding on even when the speaker's grip fails. The 'deep end' is the threat, not the destination.
A few masked profanities ('F you,' 'What in the H') and references to anger and a firearm, but these serve the emotional realism of the song rather than glorifying anything. The language is restrained given the weight of the subject matter.
The song moves through genuine anguish over racial injustice, fatherlessness, and spiritual exhaustion, but the chorus and bridge keep returning to God's grip rather than the speaker's own. The wrestling-with-the-Holy-Ghost imagery is Jacob at Jabbok, not nihilism.
Lecrae is doing what the Psalms do: naming real pain without sanitizing it, then refusing to let the darkness have the last word. The song exists to give language to believers who are barely holding on and remind them they are being held.
