Weighed against Scripture
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”
The psalmist talks to his own downcast soul and chooses to hope in God anyway, which is exactly the movement Camp repeats in every chorus despite feeling torn and foggy.
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
God's grace made perfect in weakness mirrors Camp's image of grace falling like rain precisely when he feels most scattered and broken.
“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”
Habakkuk's resolve to rejoice in God even when everything is stripped away is the Old Testament version of the same confession Camp keeps returning to.
This song is an act of worship forged in grief. Camp does not pretend the pain away or rush past the confusion; he names it honestly, then anchors every verse back to God's faithfulness, truth, and Word. The bridge is the heart of it: brokenness is not a detour from God's will but the very place where his nearness is sought. It is lament that does not stay in the dark.
No profanity, violence, or harmful content. The language is raw and honest about pain but remains wholesome throughout.
The song moves from confusion and brokenness directly into God's arms. Doubt is present but faith wins the final word in every chorus.
Written in the wake of his first wife's death from cancer, Camp's intent is clearly to testify that trust in God survives even devastating loss.
