The narrator's self-deception is a textbook picture of a way that seems right to a person but leads somewhere worse. He can see it clearly and still cannot stop.

The Psalm describes being lifted out of the pit and the miry clay. The song describes someone who has named the pit and chosen to stay. The contrast is not a condemnation but a pointer toward what the song leaves out.

Paul's cry about doing what he does not want to do maps almost exactly onto the narrator's confession that habits and heartbreaks are hard to break even when he knows better.
