“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
Jesus warns that a person's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. Starboy builds its entire identity on exactly that abundance.
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
Pride goes before destruction. The song's posture is almost a case study in the kind of unchecked pride this verse names.
“And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour. Qohelet also pursued everything Starboy brags about — pleasure, wealth, accomplishment — and called it vanity. The difference is that Ecclesiastes arrives at that verdict; Starboy never does.
Starboy is a flex anthem built around the idea that fame, money, cars, and women constitute a full and sufficient life. The 'ivory' reference is almost certainly cocaine, and the cup-switching ('I switch up my cup, I kill any pain') points to lean or alcohol as emotional management. The song's most honest moment is 'we don't pray for love, we just pray for cars' — it names its own theology plainly. There is no lament, no reaching, no crack of light. It is a closed system of self-worship.
Profanity throughout, references to cocaine use ('cut that ivory into skinny pieces / then she clean it with her face'), casual sexual bragging, and repeated use of a racial slur.
The song's worldview is explicitly self-worshipping. The line 'we don't pray for love, we just pray for cars' is not ironic — it is the thesis. Fame and wealth replace any transcendent longing. There is no searching here, only arrival at the self as god.
The Weeknd is a skilled stylist and some readings treat this as self-aware excess, but the song offers no distance from what it celebrates. The listener is invited to admire the 'starboy' posture without critique or consequence.
