Matthew 27:28-35

They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. And they twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand, knelt down before Him, and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Then they spit on Him and took the staff and struck Him on the head repeatedly. After they had mocked Him, they removed the robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him. Along the way they found a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross of Jesus. And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull, they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it. When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lots.

  • “Nail a nigga to the cross, he walk around like Teezo”

Not Like Us · Kendrick Lamar

    strains against Matthew 27:27-31

The crucifixion is sacred suffering for sin's redemption; using it as a punchline trivializes what Scripture treats with reverence and weight.

  • “I wear this crown of thorns”

    Hurt · Johnny Cash

    strains against Matthew 27:29

Cash borrows the image of Christ's mocked crown to describe his own guilt, an inversion that still points, however obliquely, toward the cross as the place where such shame is answered.

  • “Should've prayed before them shooters came and nailed him to cross”

peekaboo (feat. AZ Chike) · Kendrick Lamar

    strains against Matthew 27:35-37

Invoking crucifixion imagery to mock a rival's death flips the cross, a symbol of mercy and sacrifice, into a taunt.
