The song's core image of a light being kindled in darkness echoes this verse, though the Psalm locates the source of that light in God rather than within the person themselves.

The song's insistence that the listener is original and cannot be replaced resonates with God's declaration that each person is called by name and known. The song captures the feeling without naming the one who grounds it.

Paul locates the treasure, the light, in clay jars precisely so the surpassing power is seen to come from God and not from us. The song reverses this: the firework was always inside you. Both affirm the worth of the person; they differ sharply on where the power originates.
Firework is a genuine attempt to speak hope to people who feel like they have nothing left. It opens by naming real pain honestly, feeling buried, unheard, paper-thin, and responds with a call to rise. That instinct is good. The tension is that the song locates the remedy entirely within the person: the spark was always inside you, you just have to let it out. That is an encouraging half-truth, but it stops short of the fuller truth that our worth is given, not generated, and that some sparks need to be lit from outside us entirely.

The song reaches toward hope and dignity for the hurting, which is a real and good impulse. But the source of that hope is firmly internal: the spark, the worth, the light are all already inside you. It does not reach toward God or anything beyond the self, though it does not mock faith either.
Perry wrote this as an anthem of encouragement for people feeling invisible or worthless. The music video notably depicts people struggling with depression, a same-sex relationship, and illness. The intent is compassionate and uplifting, not manipulative or harmful.
